The first step of the process begins by taking a mould/impression of your baby's foot or hand using a premium, non-toxic, skin safe seaweed based impression material called Alginate, this is the material that is typically used at the dentist when they take an impression of your mouth.
The impression material only takes a couple of minutes to set and it doesn't matter if your child wriggles a little bit, the material can tolerate some movement and still gives a beautiful detailed cast.
The casting appointment usually takes between 30-60 minutes depending on how many casts need to be taken. I then take the impressions away to create the cast by using a high-quality premium plaster. Once the cast has thoroughly dried I can apply the finish that you have chosen and frame your casts.
Unfortunately I am unable to post the finished casts as they are fragile and cannot be remade if they are broken in transit. But we can arrange a convenient time for collection or I can deliver locally.
I like to allow an hour for the impressions to be taken but it typically does not take this long.
The finished product can take 7-9 weeks to be finished. If you need your casting for a specific date we can arraneg this.
Casting can be done at any age from 1 week to 100 years old! All the materials that I use are completely safe to use on newborn babies.
The impression taking is carried out in my studio, I am based in East Grinstead.
Home visits can be arranged if this is more convenient for you (travel costs will apply), however due to the nature of the work I advise attending the appointment at the studio where possible as it can get messy.
The finished casts are typically ready for collection around 8 -9 weeks after your impression taking appointment. Larger pieces could take longer but I will discuss this with you upon booking.
The drying of the casts is a process which cannot be rushed in order to ensure a perfect finish.
